Towards the self-powered IoT

Short Description and Goals

Internet-of-things scales to billions of end devices across the globe. Most of those devices are deeply embedded in the natural or human made environment and are expected to operate seamlessly, untethered, and (if possible) perpetually.

The answer to this combination of requirements necessitates an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis and design of the power provision subsystems of the corresponding IoT devices.

Potential solutions must balance the devices’ energy demands; the size, weight, and lifespan of the power storage device; and potentially the use of in-situ energy harvesting appliances. Depending on the application, sophisticated power consumption control must be enforced, while in parallel exploiting the seasonal behavior of various renewable energy sources.

This session targets novel ideas for the proliferation of energy autonomy and perpetual operation of embedded networked devices. We invite original contributions for the analysis and design of self-powered systems, including (but not limited to): practical approaches towards energy harvesting power supplies; analysis of the energy content in the point-ofinstallation; design of energy-balance algorithms etc.

Dr. Gregory Doumenis, University of Ioannina

Gregory Doumenis received his Diploma in EE (1990) and his PhD in Broadband communication systems (1994) from the Electrical Engineering Department of NTUA, Greece. He participated as researcher and later as project manager in several EU R&D projects in the areas of broadband networking and embedded systems. Dr. Doumenis is assistant professor at the dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications of University of Ioannina, where he teaches courses on “IoT”, “Embedded systems”, “Entrepreneurship and innovation” and “Autonomous sensor networks”. He is director of the “Autonomous Systems” laboratory (ASL), focusing on embedded systems, Internet of Things, energy efficiency and scavenging and autonomous navigation of smart objects. Dr. Doumenis is co-author of more than 30 research papers published in widely accepted scientific magazines or international conferences and has applied for national and international patents. He has been invited to review papers for highly recognized journals such as IEEE’s Micro and Communications letters and Elsevier’s Integration VLSI journal. He is a regular reviewer and evaluator of EU backed RTD proposals and projects.

Ioannis Masklavanos, University of Ioannina

Ioannis Masklavanos graduated from the Department of Information Engineering of TEI of Epirus in 2016. During his thesis, he developed an IoT platform that was used to observe and control the department’s HVAC system. He received his master’s degree from the same institution (2019). During his master thesis, he dealt with the study and evaluation of thermoelectric generators and built an experimental measurement system for very low thermal gradients. He is member of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory of University of Ioannina and since 2019, he is PhD candidate at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of University of Ioannina. His research interests include energy scavenging technologies as well as with energy balance algorithms. He has been employed in research projects on design and study of microelectronic systems and renewable energy sources.
